Mackenzie Commercial Finance was founded by Martin and Alana Mackenzie. Between them, they bring over twenty years of banking, finance and legal experience to every client relationship.
Martin spent his career in banking and commercial finance working for other people. Every day he dealt with business owners who had built something of their own, who had taken risks, made decisions, carried the weight of running an enterprise, and who needed a finance partner who understood that world rather than processed it from a distance.
After years watching institutional decision-making drift further from commercial reality, and seeing the broker market fill with generalists who covered everything and specialised in nothing, he set up Mackenzie Commercial Finance with one clear focus: asset finance and refinance, done properly, with compliance and the client at the centre. Not a full-service brokerage trying to be all things to all people. A specialist, doing what specialists do best.
Martin has over twenty years of experience in financial services, spent almost entirely in banking and asset finance roles. He started in the Bank of Scotland and HBOS branch network, progressing through branch management and achieving the highest percentage against target results in his region in 2013. In that role, he was responsible for a full range of personal and business lending decisions and for managing a team of staff across multiple locations.
From branch banking, he moved into a Local Business Manager position covering Aberdeen to Inverness, with a specific focus on lending to high-growth new-start businesses up to £250,000 per facility. This gave him a thorough grounding in credit assessment, business plan evaluation, and working with businesses in their most formative and often most challenging early years.
He then joined Close Brothers Asset Finance, completing their Sales Academy in London before returning to Scotland as Regional Sales Manager for the North of Scotland. This was his formal entry into the asset finance specialism, and he has not left it since. After Close Brothers, he joined Highland Credit and Leasing Services in Inverness, where he spent the majority of his career and where asset refinance became his primary focus. He then established Mackenzie Commercial Finance.
The experience that distinguishes Martin most clearly is his background in preparing complex credit proposals for lenders' underwriting teams. He understands what a credit committee needs to see in order to approve a refinance, not because he has read about it, but because he used to write those proposals and negotiate the outcomes. That knowledge informs every proposal we submit on a client's behalf.

Alana's background is in the legal sector, where she worked as a Senior Paralegal in Inverness across a range of disciplines including Debt Recovery. Her legal experience brings a different but essential dimension to the business: rigour in client onboarding, precision in documentation, and a thorough understanding of process and compliance obligations.
As Director, Alana oversees the firm's regulatory compliance framework, including the requirements that apply to us as Appointed Representatives of Crystal Business Finance Limited, and manages the operational processes that ensure clients are onboarded correctly, documentation is accurate and complete, and the firm's obligations are met at every stage. The combination of Martin's commercial finance expertise and Alana's legal and compliance background is what allows MCF to operate with both commercial effectiveness and regulatory confidence.

Every client deals directly with Martin or Alana from first enquiry to final signature. There are no account managers, no administrative handovers, and no call centre staff involved in client relationships. When you speak to us, you are speaking to the people who will assess your requirement, prepare your proposal, negotiate with lenders, and guide you through the process to completion.
We travel across Scotland to meet clients, inspect assets and sign paperwork in person. Same-day visits to most of Scotland are a normal part of how we work, and we do not decline client meetings because of geography. The Highlands, the islands (ferry schedule permitting), Moray, Aberdeen, Dundee, Fife, the Central Belt, we go where the clients and the assets are.
Client confidentiality is not a policy position for us, it is a fundamental principle. We never discuss one client's affairs with another. We never confirm or deny that we act for any particular business. Our case studies describe transactions by sector and general geographic location only. Names are never used, and clients will recognise their own situations in what we write, but no one else will be able to identify them. Finance is personal. We treat it as such.
