Figures and approvals
How do you work, and how is that different?
We get a lender’s approval first, then give you figures. In our experience, many brokers quote first.
There is no fee to apply. Donnie, our in house AI agent, takes applications 24/7, not only in office hours.
A person in our team reads every application, within 24 hours. A large number of lenders let you sign online, which is simpler and quicker.
Why will you not quote me a rate before a lender has approved it?
We do not lend our own money. The lender sets the price, and only once it has looked at your case.
So any figure before an approval is a guess. We get the approval first, then we tell you the figures.
There is no fee up front. So doing it properly costs you nothing extra.
Why do some brokers quote before they have an approval?
In our experience, many do it to win your commitment early. The figure is not the lender’s, so it may not last.
One business owner told us it happens to them again and again. They get a low figure, then an offer of nearly double.
We think that hurts trust in our whole industry. It is why we work the other way round.
Is a quote the same as an approval?
No. An approval comes from a lender, after it has looked at your business. A quote before that is only someone’s guess.
Ask any broker who quotes: "Is this approved?" A real approval has a lender’s reference number. If you are unsure, ask for the approval reference.
Do you ever give an indication before approval?
Rarely, and we do not like doing it. If we do, we make it very clear it is only an indication. It is not an approved figure.
Should I pick the broker with the lowest quote?
Not on price alone. Price is only one part. The conditions matter, and so does the timeframe. So does how the broker has dealt with you, and there is more besides.
We never promise the lowest price in the market. We could not know that for a fact. Sometimes we may be the lowest, and other times we may not.
What we aim for is a simple process with no hassle. To help us do that, we ask for your application details, bank statements, accounts and ID.
When you do compare figures, compare approved ones. If nothing is approved, a broker could quote an impossible 0%. An unapproved 0% means as little as an unapproved 10%.
Using a broker
What does a finance broker do?
A broker finds the lender for you. We are a broker, not a lender. We can ask over 120 lenders.
Some of the lenders on our panel are Lloyds Bank, HSBC, Lombard (part of NatWest), Haydock, Simply and Close Brothers.
Having access to them does not mean we are affiliated with them or work for them. We are brokers. Read more about our team.
What is the difference between a lender, a broker and an appointed representative?
A lender lends the money. A broker finds a lender for you, and does not lend its own money.
An appointed representative is a broker that works under a regulated firm, called its principal. We are a broker and an appointed representative.
Why is it good for me that you are an appointed representative?
It gives you more choice. We are part of a network, and the network brings lenders a lot of business together. So more lenders want to work with it.
The cost falls on us, as we pay to work this way. The number of lenders we reach is well worth it. Going alone, we could not reach as many.
In our experience, a smaller broker on its own can have fewer than 10 lenders. Some lenders may not work with it. Being an appointed representative means more lenders.
Should I use a broker or go to my bank?
It can be worth doing both. Your bank can only offer what your bank offers. A broker can ask many lenders.
A broker cannot always beat every deal. A maker’s own subsidised deal is hard to beat, as it is built to be.
Can a broker get me a better rate?
Sometimes, but we never promise it. More lenders can mean a better fit for your case. A maker’s own subsidised deal is hard to beat.
Are you tied to one lender?
No. We have a panel of over 120 lenders. We work under our principal, a regulated firm.
Do you give financial advice?
No. Ours is a non advised service. We find lenders and show you what they offer. You choose with all the facts.
Do you recommend one lender over others?
No. We show you what the lenders offer, and you choose. Lenders pay different amounts, so the one we find may not pay us the most.
Are you regulated?
Yes. Our FCA number is 1058283, and we are members of the NACFB. We are an appointed representative. That means we work under a regulated firm, called our principal.
How long have you been going?
Our firm started in 2026. Our Sales Director has worked in banking and finance since 2008, in banks, with a lender and as a broker.
Are you a call centre?
No. We are a UK broker with our office in Scotland. There is no auto dialler and no script.
Our team travels across the UK often, for customer meetings, networking events and trade shows.
Can AI help me get a business loan?
Yes. Donnie, our in house AI agent, takes applications and answers questions at any time. Your own AI assistant can talk to him too.
AI does not replace our people. A person in our team still reads every application. Read more about Donnie.
What brokers charge, and how we are paid
How much does a finance broker charge?
It differs from broker to broker. Some charge an engagement fee up front, which is a fee just to start work. It can vary.
It is more common with brokers who focus on property finance. They may also charge a fee based on a share of the amount borrowed. They earn commission from the lender too.
In asset finance, most brokers only earn a commission from the lender, when the finance completes.
Do you charge a fee to apply?
No. We charge no engagement fee and no fee to apply. We do not charge you a share of the amount borrowed either.
We do get paid a commission by the lender. Read how we are paid.
What is an engagement fee?
It is a fee some brokers take up front, before they will do any work for you. This is allowed. Each brokerage or principal decides for itself.
Do you charge an engagement fee?
No. We choose not to, so we are only paid by commission. That means we do not get paid up front and then disappear. And if our offer does not suit you, you have lost no money by applying to us.
Do you charge a direct fee when the finance completes?
No. We have decided not to charge these direct fees. Some brokers do charge one. It is often a small percentage of the amount borrowed. The client pays it directly to the broker. It comes on top of any commission the lender pays that broker.
Are there any other fees?
It would be unusual, but we want to flag one case. It can come up on a refinance, where assets are spread across the country. We cannot inspect them all in one place, so an inspection can cost us a lot.
If it does, we may talk to you about a way forward. It means we do not lose out if the inspection costs a lot and you then pull out. We keep the right to discuss a fee in that case.
Any fee would be decided after a finance offer is made, and before pay out. It would be paid to our principal, not to us.
Do you hold client money?
No. Mackenzie Commercial Finance Limited is not permitted to hold client funds. So if a fee were ever due, it would be paid to our principal.
How much commission does a broker get?
Brokers have different deals with each lender. Some lenders pay a fixed share of the amount borrowed. Some pay a flat fee. Some pay a share that can vary, up to a limit the lender sets.
The amount often depends on how complex the agreement is, and on the risk.
For us, in asset finance and business loans, it is up to 10%. In many cases it is lower.
When will I see the commission?
Always before you sign. We tell you once a lender has approved the finance and given the approved quote.
Regulated finance is a little different. The commission goes in a formal email that you must accept before going ahead.
For all other agreements, you sign a commission disclosure with the finance agreement.
Does commission make my finance cost more?
Commission is part of what you repay. It is already inside the figures you see, and is not added on top later.
It shows in different ways. On asset finance, it is part of your total repayments.
On a loan, credit card or revolving facility, it can show as a transaction on the account, to be repaid. A revolving facility is a limit you can use and repay again. In the end it comes to the same thing.
Is the commission safe once a broker is paid?
No. We are paid when the agreement completes, but nothing is secure until it is repaid in full.
Most lenders can take back up to all the commission. That can happen if a customer settles early, misses payments or commits fraud.
In rare cases, a broker could even have to pay the debt. Some lenders pay the commission in instalments instead.
Is the commission all profit for the broker?
No. Commission is turnover, not profit. A £1,000 commission is not £1,000 in a broker’s back pocket.
Our principal takes a share first. Then come office costs, staff, travel and the other costs of running a business.
And that is before HMRC gets involved.
Why are you open about what you earn?
Because income is not a dirty word. We look for businesses that can show they can run a business. A broker should be able to do the same.
We are not a charity. We would rather tell you how it works than have you guess.
Comparing brokers
What should I ask a finance broker?
How many asset finance lenders do you work with? What fees do you charge to apply?
Is your quote approved, or just figures with no approval? If you are unsure, ask for the approval reference.
Have I signed a consent form yet, so you can speak to lenders for me?
Can one finance broker be an expert in everything?
No. A finance broker is not one size fits all. Everything works best when people do what they are good at. We focus on asset finance and business loans. Others focus on areas such as property or bridging finance. So ask any broker what it focuses on.
Does a broker need my permission to speak to lenders?
Yes. Before a broker talks to lenders about your business, you should sign a consent form. It says how the broker works. It also gives permission for broker work, including credit checks.
Until it is signed, the broker has no authority to discuss your business with lenders.
We keep this simple. We send the form through Doc2, our e-sign service, so you can sign it online at once.
I have already been to another broker. Can I still come to you?
Yes. We are not fussed, and competition is good. What we want to know is this: have you actually been approved?
If you have, tell us which lender if you can. There is no point in us going to the same lender, as that leaves you nothing to compare.
You can share your figures if you like. You do not have to. We welcome the chance to try to beat or match them. Some brokers are not so happy to deal with clients who have spoken to another broker. We believe in fair competition in the market.
Why might a lender say it has already seen my proposal?
It is natural in our industry. There are only so many lenders. If one appears to fit, another broker may have concluded the same.
The lender will normally ask both brokers for a signed declaration, confirming which broker you want to go ahead with. If that happens, we may ask you to sign that form.
Why does it help to tell you about other proposals?
It can help us avoid a lender seeing the same proposal twice. It saves you signing a declaration, and it saves time for everyone.
Does paying a broker a fee get me more lenders?
Not by itself. A broker who charges a fee to apply is likely to use the same lenders as one who does not.
A broker who takes a fee up front may not focus on asset finance or business loans. Their lenders may lean towards property or bridging finance. So ask.
I already have a broker or a bank. Is that a problem?
Not at all. We are glad to be a second option, whenever you want one. If you never need us, that is fine too.
I do not need finance right now. Should I keep your details?
If you like. Many businesses talk to us before they need to buy. It means you know the steps when the time comes.
I was approved, but want to use another broker or go direct. What should I do?
Speak to us first. If you can, tell us who approved it and what you want to change. Then we can tell you what is possible.
Applying
How do I apply?
Donnie, our in house AI agent, takes your application 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. It is free and takes under 5 minutes. You can also phone or email us.
What happens after I apply?
A person in our team reads every application. We send your consent form within 24 hours, and normally much faster.
Then we do the credit checks and send your case to lenders, who do their own checks. We come back to you with approved figures.
How long does a decision take?
Our team answers within 24 hours. A lender can then take anything from an instant decision to a number of days.
A decline, or an approval with poor terms, can make it take longer to get the approval that works best. We keep you updated all the way.
How long until the money is paid out?
It depends on the lender and the seller. Once you sign, the lender pays when it has a correct invoice and its conditions are met. The fastest has been the same day, for a simple case. Hard cases can take a few weeks.
Does applying mean a credit check?
Applying to us does not touch your credit score. To go ahead, you sign our consent form.
Then we run a light credit check on the company, often known as a soft search. Each lender then does its own check, soft or hard.
Do I have to sign paper documents?
Often not. A large number of lenders let you sign online. You sign through the lender, or an e-sign service that lenders have approved.
That makes it simpler and quicker for you.
Do I need to meet you in person?
Not usually. Most of it is done by phone, video call and signing online. Regulated finance, in the IV postcode area, is face to face. If you want to meet, ask us. Our team travels across the UK.
What if I decide not to go ahead?
You owe us nothing, unless you have agreed the rare inspection fee explained under fees. Saying no is always fine, and you are always welcome back. We only ask that you tell us, even in a line.
Who is Donnie?
Donnie is our in house AI agent. He takes applications and answers questions at any time. Your AI assistant can ask him too. Read more about Donnie.
Documents and ID
What documents will a lender need?
Most often, your latest accounts and bank statements, plus ID for each director. See our free business finance checklist.
Why do you need my accounts?
Accounts show a formal picture of your business at its year end. They are one of the main things most lenders look at.
Why do you need my bank statements?
Lenders usually want 3 months for asset finance, and often 6 months for business loans.
They show how you use existing debts and how you run your account. They show if there is cash to meet new payments, and if anything needs to be talked about first.
Why do brokers and lenders need these documents?
The broker and the lender both need a good picture of who they are lending to. It is common sense.
We can also carry a risk for the length of the agreement. So we must show the lender we did our own checks.
Why do you need my ID?
It is part of the anti money laundering rules. We must make sure people are who they say they are, and keep fraud risk low.
It also shows the lenders we have done all we can.
How do you check ID if you are far away?
We use electronic ID checks with customers we deal with at a distance. If that will not work, we can take real copies of your ID in person, anywhere in the UK.
What if I do not have my invoice or documents?
Speak to us. For a refinance, we can often go back to the first supplier for a copy of the invoice.
Your accountant may also have it on record. Or they may write to the finance company to confirm you own the asset.
Who can get finance
What kinds of business do you work with?
All types. We arrange regulated and unregulated finance. That covers limited companies and LLPs, sole traders and small partnerships, for asset finance and business loans. An LLP is a limited liability partnership, a kind of company.
What is a regulated customer?
A sole trader or a small partnership, of up to 3 partners. A limited company or an LLP is not a regulated customer.
What is a regulated hire purchase agreement?
It is a hire purchase agreement made under the Consumer Credit Act. It applies to a sole trader or small partnership borrowing £25,000 or less.
The rules give the customer extra protection, and the documents are more formal. Hire purchase for a limited company or an LLP is not regulated.
Is asset finance regulated?
It depends on who is borrowing and how much. Most asset finance for limited companies and LLPs is not regulated. Larger agreements with sole traders and small partnerships usually are not either.
Do you arrange regulated finance everywhere?
Not for sole traders and small partnerships. For them, we only arrange regulated agreements in the IV postcode area, in the North of Scotland. We could do it UK wide, and we choose not to.
This is our own business decision. The amounts are small, our costs are higher and the commission is limited. So it does not work for us across the UK.
Car finance for a private individual has its own limits, set out in the answer on personal finance.
What is the smallest amount you arrange?
For asset finance and business loans, we focus on £15,000 and over for a limited company or LLP. For a sole trader or small partnership, it is over £25,000, anywhere in the UK.
Need less, or something other than asset finance or a business loan? Please speak to us.
Can a sole trader get finance?
Yes, for over £25,000, anywhere in the UK. For £25,000 or less, it is regulated, so we arrange it only in the IV postcode area.
Do you arrange personal finance?
Business is our main work. We also arrange car finance for private individuals, and we focus on larger amounts. The car must come from a UK car dealer.
Where you live sets what we can do. For £25,000 or less, we only arrange it in the IV postcode area. For over £25,000 and under £40,000, it is Scotland only. For £40,000 and over, it is anywhere in the UK.
It is regulated, and the lenders’ criteria are stricter. We do not arrange home mortgages.
Can you finance a classic or prestige car?
Yes. We have a number of lenders who specialise in classic and prestige cars for private individuals. Limits on where we arrange it are in the answer on personal finance.
Do you work with my kind of business?
Very likely. Business loans can apply to any type of business. Asset finance covers everything down to cars and IT equipment. So it could apply to almost any business working in the UK.
Can a new business get finance?
In most cases, yes, if its plan makes sense to a lender. Fewer lenders take a new business. Our free business plan template helps.
How long must my business have been trading?
It depends on the lender. Many ask for 1 or 2 years. Some will look at less, and a few set no minimum at all.
Do I need a business plan?
Most established businesses do not. A new business often does, as it has no accounts to show yet. Our free business plan template helps.
Can I get business finance with bad credit?
Often, yes. It often depends on how we explain your business to the lender. We never promise a yes.
What credit score do I need?
There is no one set score. Each lender has its own rules, and good credit helps. There are lenders for good and poor credit.
Can I get finance with no credit check?
No. Every lender does its own check before it lends.
Can I get finance with a CCJ?
Often, yes. We quite often see CCJs in a business. A CCJ can mean bad credit, but it need not stop you, if there is a reasonable explanation.
Tell us the circumstances before we approach a lender, so it does not come as a surprise. Then we can go to a lender that may take a fair view.
Why should I tell you about credit problems up front?
Because it is better to answer a problem before an underwriter asks. An underwriter is the person at the lender who reviews your case. If they find it first, they grow sceptical. Then they dig harder for more concerns. We want to work with the credit teams, not against them.
What is a CCJ?
A CCJ is a county court judgment. It is a formal court decision that you owe money, used in England and Wales. GOV.UK says records are kept for 6 years, unless you pay in full within a month.
What is the Scottish version of a CCJ?
It is called a decree. It is a formal court order saying you must pay money to a creditor, says mygov.scot. It is noted on your credit file for 6 years from the judgment date. It is marked as satisfied once paid.
What is a court judgment in Northern Ireland?
It is a money judgment, made if you fail to repay money owed to a claimant. The Enforcement of Judgments Office enforces these judgments in Northern Ireland. Registry Trust says it stays on the public register for 6 years, unless cancelled or set aside.
What is bankruptcy?
It is a formal process for a person who cannot pay their debts. A trustee or official takes control of their finances, to repay the people they owe as far as possible. Most debts are then wiped out.
In Scotland, it is called sequestration. Citizens Advice Scotland says it usually ends after 12 months, or 6 months on the simplest route. It affects a credit rating for 6 years.
What is a trust deed in Scotland?
It is a voluntary agreement between a person and the people they owe. They pay a set amount towards their debts, and the rest is written off at the end. A licensed insolvency practitioner, an expert in debt law, acts as trustee.
Citizens Advice Scotland says it usually ends after 4 years, and affects a credit rating for 6 years. We do not give debt advice.
What if my bank or a lender says no?
One no is not the end. Each lender has its own rules. We find out why, then ask a lender that may take a different view.
Do you cover my part of the UK?
Yes. We work with businesses across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Our office is in Scotland, and our team travels across the UK.
Is finance hard to get?
Is asset finance hard to get?
Not always. Much of the decision rests on the asset, the customer, their background and their credit profile.
An established, profitable business buying a new or nearly new asset from a good source should not expect major issues.
An unprofitable or new business, with little experience, buying an unusual asset from an odd source will find it harder. It may still be possible.
Is it hard to get a business loan?
It depends on your business. With no asset behind most loans, a lender looks hard at your accounts, bank statements and credit. Each case is different. Read more about business loans.
What do lenders look at?
The business, its accounts and bank statements, the people behind it and their credit. For asset finance, they also look at the asset and where it comes from.
Is there a lender for everything?
Usually, yes. A good broker can ask many lenders, so there is usually a home for most things.
Then the choice is yours. You decide if you want to accept the approval we can find.
Can I finance a used asset?
Yes, definitely. Lenders may offer different terms for different assets and ages.
Your credit may suit a well known high street bank. Your asset’s age, type or seller may suit a different lender.
That lender may cost more. It is not a comment on your credit. It is about what you are buying.
What can I finance?
Most business assets. That means vans, trucks, cars, plant, diggers, machines and equipment, new or used. Read more about asset finance.
Can finance cover software or other soft assets?
Yes, some lenders will look at them. Hard assets can be sold on with most of their value intact. Soft assets are harder to sell on.
IT equipment can quickly go out of date. Restaurant furniture may be unique in design, with a limited resale value when used.
Soft assets tend to cost more to finance than hard assets, but often less than an unsecured loan. A good broker will look at all the available options.
Who is asset finance good for?
Any business that needs an asset and would rather spread the cost. It keeps your cash free for other things.
The downside is the total paid is more than the price. If payments stop, the lender can take the asset back.
How much, how long, a deposit
How much can my business borrow?
We set no top limit of our own. For asset finance and business loans, our smallest is £15,000 for a limited company or LLP. Most lenders lend business loans from £25,000, and some from £15,000.
How long can my business borrow for?
A business loan runs from 3 months to 10 years. Asset finance runs from 1 to 7 years, most often 2 to 5.
Do I need a deposit?
Not always. No deposit is possible. For asset finance, most lenders look for 5 to 10%.
What will the finance cost in total?
We explain it to you before the completed documents go to the lender. Every agreement shows the total repayments, plus any fees.
So you have all the facts before you commit to anything. Our free calculator helps you see the sums.
Are the payments fixed?
On a fixed rate hire purchase agreement, yes. The payment stays the same, and most agreements are fixed rate.
Fewer lenders offer a variable rate agreement. Its payments go up or down with the Bank of England base rate.
Is there a personal guarantee?
Lenders often ask for one. A director promises to pay if the business cannot. That could put their home at risk. We tell you before you sign.
Does a guarantor have to own a home?
Not always. Some lenders insist on it, some do not, and others look at the case.
Is asset finance secured?
Yes. The asset itself is the security. That is why a lender can take it back if payments stop. A business loan may be unsecured or secured.
What if I miss a payment?
Tell the lender as soon as you can. A missed payment can hurt your credit, and fees may apply. Read your agreement.
What if my business cannot pay?
Talk to the lender early. If payments stop, the lender can take the asset back. A free adviser such as Business Debtline can help too. We do not give debt advice.
How is VAT paid?
On hire purchase, you can pay it at the start, or some lenders pay it for now. On a finance lease, it is added to each rental.
Is finance tax deductible?
It depends on the type. We are not tax advisers, so ask your accountant.
Kinds of finance
What is business finance?
Business finance is money a business gets from a lender, to buy what it needs or fund its plans. It is paid back over time. It includes asset finance, business loans, refinance and invoice finance.
What is asset finance, and how does it work?
Asset finance is money to get a van, machine or equipment, paid back each month. If payments stop, the lender can take the asset back. Read more about asset finance.
What is hire purchase?
Your business gets the asset now and pays for it each month. Once every payment and the option to purchase fee are paid, it belongs to your business.
What is a finance lease?
On a finance lease, you use the asset without owning it. You pay a rental each month.
What is asset refinance?
You raise money against an asset your business already owns, and pay it back each month. It is also called sale and hire purchase back.
What is a business loan?
Money lent to your business, paid back over an agreed time. You can use it for many things. It may be unsecured or secured.
Can I get a business loan without security?
Often, yes. Some lenders offer unsecured loans, some offer secured loans, and some offer both.
Which finance is right for my business?
For one asset, look at asset finance. To own it at the end, look at hire purchase. To use it without owning it, look at a finance lease.
For cash from what you own, look at refinance. For money for many things, look at a business loan. Tell us what you need, and we will show you the options. You choose.
What is the difference between hire purchase and a finance lease?
With hire purchase, your business owns the asset at the end. With a finance lease, the lender does. Read more about hire purchase and finance lease.
What is the difference between a finance lease and an operating lease or contract hire?
With a finance lease, you normally keep using the asset at the end, on a small yearly rental. With an operating lease or contract hire, it normally goes back.
Asset finance or a business loan?
Asset finance is tied to one asset. A business loan is money for many things. Read more about business loans.
Can a business loan replace my overdraft?
Yes, it can. We can arrange a business loan to clear and replace an overdraft. That gives you a set plan that brings the balance down.
We cannot arrange an overdraft itself. We do have good relationships with a number of banks. We can introduce you for a bank account, savings account or overdraft. Please speak to us.
Is asset finance the same as asset-based lending?
Not quite. Asset-based lending is a term mostly used by invoice finance lenders. Asset finance pays for an asset you want to get.
What is invoice finance?
Invoice finance lets you borrow against bills your customers have not paid yet. We arrange it with the invoice finance lenders on our panel. Just ask us.
Can I put several debts into one?
Often, yes. The debts can include tax owed to HMRC. Read more about debt consolidation.
Can you help with commercial property or a commercial mortgage?
Yes, please talk to us. We do not arrange it ourselves, but we have reliable contacts and we can introduce you to them. We do not arrange home mortgages.
Can a business buy a car on finance?
Yes. A limited company can buy a car on hire purchase or a finance lease. Ask your accountant about the tax.
During and after your agreement
Can I pay it off early?
Often, yes. The lender adds up the repayments left. In some cases, it may take some off the fees.
Hire purchase is built as a fixed term, not a flexible one. If you need something flexible, we have other kinds of business finance.
Can I pay a lump sum off my agreement?
In most cases, no, unless it was agreed at the start. Ask us before you sign if this matters to you.
Can I add insurance to my agreement?
No. Lenders want insurance taken off the invoice, so you pay for it yourself.
What is a balloon?
A bigger last payment on an agreement. It makes each monthly payment lower. You still have to pay it at the end.
What happens at the end of hire purchase?
Once every payment and the option to purchase fee are paid, the asset belongs to your business.
What happens at the end of a finance lease?
You normally keep using the asset, on a small yearly rental, until it is sold to someone else or scrapped.
Can I sell an asset that is on finance?
Pay off the finance first. Then it is yours to sell. We can help you get the settlement figure from the lender. That is what it costs to clear the finance.
Refinance
Can I raise money against assets my business owns?
Yes, with asset refinance. Most lenders lend up to 80% of what the asset is worth. Read more about asset refinance.
Can I refinance an asset already on finance?
Yes. We just need the settlement figure, which is what it costs to clear the finance. But there must be some equity, meaning the asset is worth more than you owe.
If you owe more than it is worth, the business must clear the difference. Or it can add other assets to cover it.
Can I refinance a balloon?
Yes. It is a very good answer if you want to keep using the asset. It suits a business without the cash ready.
Start a few months before it is due. If you wait until the last moment, a delay could mean you miss the date.
Why does refinance cost more?
Lenders who do refinance are often not the ones with the lowest prices on new assets from main dealers. It is also more detailed work for the broker and lender, and it takes experience to do well.
The risk can be higher if a business is in a hard spot. Even so, the difference is not usually huge.
It is secured, so it tends to stay more competitive than unsecured borrowing. That is why it is more and more popular.
Can I refinance without the documents?
Speak to us. We can often get a copy of the invoice from the first supplier. Your accountant may have it on record, or may write to the finance company to confirm you own it.
Can I refinance something in someone else’s name?
That is a private sale. They need to show an invoice and proof they own it. Read more about private sale finance.
Can I refinance an asset, then sell it?
Pay off the finance first. Then it is yours to sell.
My business has a negative net worth. Can I still get refinance?
Negative net worth means the business owes more than it owns. Some lenders will look at it, if you tell us the story behind the numbers.
I owe HMRC. Can refinance help?
It may free up cash to pay them. Speak to us about your case. Read more about asset refinance.
Large amounts and buying a business
What is the most a lender will lend?
It varies a lot, as lenders set different limits. Some stop at £500,000 or lower. Others go over £1 million. A few have no hard limit at all. That is one of the benefits of a wide panel of lenders.
Am I capped by one lender’s top limit?
No. That is one of the benefits of using a broker. Each lender has its own top limit, and we are not capped by any one of them.
Can you arrange large finance for corporate clients?
Yes. We can arrange large finance for corporate clients. That includes restructuring large scale asset finance, and funding long term projects. Each case still needs a lender’s approval.
Can I borrow to buy a business?
Yes, it can be done. An entrepreneur can use borrowing to buy a business that is already trading, with debt funding the purchase. Each case still needs a lender’s approval.
Tell us about the business and your plans.
Overseas owners and investors
Can a UK business with an overseas owner get finance?
Yes. The business we fund must be based in the UK. Its ultimate owner, the person or company that owns it in the end, can be overseas. We have had success placing these cases with lenders.
Can a UK company with a director overseas get finance?
Yes, it can. We have completed asset finance for a UK company whose only director was based in the USA. The ultimate owner of that company was a USA holding company.
Will the lender ask for more if the owner or director is overseas?
Most will, yes. Most lenders do more checks on these cases, so expect to be asked for more documents. You may also need to meet face to face. That lets us confirm we have met the director who signs the finance agreement.
Does a UK based director make it simpler?
Yes. We quite regularly see businesses with an overseas ownership structure and a UK based director. It is more straightforward for us, as we can sign with a director based in the UK. Who to have as a director is for the business owners to discuss, possibly with their accountant.
I am overseas and want to buy a UK business. Can you help?
Yes, and we are keen to speak to you. We offer our broker services to overseas investors, and help with their plans to buy a UK business.

Buying the asset
Can I get 0% finance?
Sometimes, but usually direct from a dealer, not through a broker. These deals are mostly on brand new assets, with a subsidy behind them. You often see them on new machines.
They are there to win the sale. There is often a trade off, as you get less discount on the price.
No broker can offer 0% unless it is part of one of these programmes.
What is a line of credit?
It means a lender approves your finance before you have chosen the asset. You then know what you can spend when you go looking.
Can I get finance approved before I go to see the asset?
Yes, and it is a good idea. You go in knowing you are approved. You also have the freedom to buy the asset where you want.
What should I check with the seller first?
Confirm that the seller will accept your broker approved finance, and will raise the invoice to the finance company. Do that before you commit to the asset.
Can you find or source an asset for me?
Not directly. We cannot arrange the asset, or order something in specifically. But we can speak to a number of industry contacts and make introductions. We are happy to use our contacts once we have a line of credit in place for you.
Can I check if a vehicle has finance on it?
Yes. You can run an HPI check yourself, which is an online check for finance owed. And every lender does one before it pays out.
It is up to the dealer or supplier to make sure the asset is free of finance. We ask them to clear it before they invoice.
Quite often they do not, and that causes a delay at pay out. The broker and lender cannot control that.
Can I buy from a private seller on finance?
Yes. Fewer lenders do it, as they check more. Read more about private sale finance.
Can you finance an asset from abroad?
It is possible with some lenders, but it is not common. Tell us what you are buying and where from.
Do you have to inspect the asset?
Sometimes, mostly on a private sale. The lender may inspect it itself, by video, or ask us or the seller to send pictures.
What if the seller will not accept outside finance?
Many big dealers only invoice their own finance partner, or take cash. Unless the asset is one of a kind, find another dealer.
Can I finance a van?
Yes. Any business can finance a van, new or used. Read more about van finance.

Accountants and others who refer clients
Do you work with accountants and others who refer clients?
Yes, very much so. Accountants, dealers, suppliers, other brokers and bank staff all pass clients to us. We pass clients on too.
I am a motor dealer. When would I introduce a customer to you?
When you have been unable to get an approval through your own finance. We know finance commission is one of your main sources of income on a sale. You have targets to meet with your lenders too. So we know you will not hand over everything.
If you are struggling to place something, we would be delighted to look at it. It does not matter where you are in the UK. We can also talk about paying for introductions, if it will be regular and we can agree terms.
I am a solicitor. How could you help my clients?
Many solicitors have clients who need to raise money through a business. They may need to buy out a business partner. They may need to buy an ex-husband or ex-wife out of a business, as part of a divorce. Or there may be a family dispute after a member of a family business has passed away.
Borrowing through the business could be part of a resolution. We can also talk about paying for introductions, if it will be regular and we can agree terms.
I am a finance broker. Will you work with me?
Yes, even if you are a commercial finance broker. We focus on a certain area of finance. Others focus on areas such as property or bridging finance. We actively want good relations with them, to find the right answers for our clients. We can also talk about paying for introductions, if it will be regular and we can agree terms.
I am a commercial insurance broker. Can we work together?
Yes, we are interested to speak to you. We can also talk about paying for introductions, if it will be regular and we can agree terms.
I work in another finance role. Can we work together?
We are keen to speak to you, to see if there are ways to work together.
Can you make introductions for a home mortgage?
No. We are not authorised to make introductions for a residential mortgage, which is a mortgage on a home. It is a complete no, and we will not go there.
Do you pay for introductions?
Yes, for regular introducers. Any payment is always shown in full to the client.
How do I sign up to refer clients?
It is easy. Speak to Alana, our Business Development Director, on 07719 006 400 or at alana@mackenziecf.co.uk.
She can talk accountants, dealers, suppliers, solicitors and brokers through what we offer.
Free: 9 questions to ask before you sign any business finance
Ask these of any lender or broker, us included. Print this page, or save it as a PDF.
- What is the total I will pay, as well as each payment?
- What fees are there, and when are they paid?
- Is there a balloon, a bigger last payment?
- How does paying it off early work?
- Is a personal guarantee asked for, and from whom?
- How is the broker paid, and how many asset finance lenders do they use?
- Is the figure approved by a lender? What is the approval reference?
- Is there a fee to apply?
- Did you get my signed consent before speaking to lenders?
Before you apply, our business finance checklist lists the documents a lender will ask for.
How do you get paid, and what does the finance cost?
The lender pays us a commission, only once your finance is in place. There is no fee to apply, and no fee up front. Apply by phone, by email, or online with Donnie, our in house AI agent, in under 5 minutes.
If you stop before your finance is in place, you owe us nothing, unless you agreed the rare inspection fee. The lender pays our commission to our principal, the firm we work under. It is already inside any figures we give you.
Most lenders pay a share of the amount borrowed. It is up to 10% of what you borrow, and often less. It depends on the lender. You see it before you sign. Lenders pay different amounts, so the one we find may not pay us the most, or the least. A dealer who arranges finance is a broker too.
Lenders' own fees vary. As a guide, a fee to set up the agreement is about £100 to £500. It is often paid with the first payment. Some charge about £30 to £50 a year. On hire purchase, about £100 to £300 to own the asset at the end.
